Drinks recipe
Spiced cucumber mint buttermilk
A cooling, protein-containing Indian drink made with curd, cucumber, mint and roasted cumin. Useful as a low-calorie swap for juice, sweet tea or packaged summer drinks.
Method
Cook flow
- 1
Whisk the curd until smooth.
- 2
Add chilled water gradually and whisk again until the drink is thin and even.
- 3
Crush the mint leaves lightly with your fingers or a spoon so they release aroma without turning bitter.
- 4
Stir in grated cucumber, mint, roasted cumin, ginger, black pepper and salt.
- 5
Taste and adjust salt. Add ice only if serving immediately.
- 6
Serve cold. If storing, keep covered in the fridge and stir before drinking.
Keep it lighter
Flavour without calorie creep
- Use low-fat curd if the drink is part of a fat-loss plan; it keeps protein while reducing energy density.
- Roasted cumin, mint, ginger and pepper increase flavour intensity, so the drink does not need sugar.
- Keep salt modest if you have hypertension or water retention; flavour can come from cumin and mint instead.
Why this works better than sweet drinks
Most packaged juices and sweet tea add quick sugar without much fullness. Buttermilk is different because curd contributes protein, calcium and fermentation by-products, while water keeps the drink light. Protein and fluid together can improve satiety compared with a sugar-sweetened drink of similar volume.
The cucumber and mint are not magic detox ingredients. Their real value is habit design: they make a simple drink refreshing enough that people choose it instead of higher-calorie beverages.
JoFitness nutrition note
Curd-based drinks can fit many Indian diet plans because they are familiar, affordable and easy to repeat. For clients with lactose intolerance, we usually test tolerance with a small portion first or use lactose-free curd where available.
Best time to drink
Use it as a mid-morning drink, post-walk drink, or evening snack replacement. It also works with lunch when the meal is spicy, because the curd base helps balance heat without adding fried sides.
